* GREG DERBY *
Describe your background with home recording?
“I have been writing songs ever since I could play and I have been recording my original songs from the moment I
first started writing. Obviously the quality of my recordings has improved significantly since the days when I would
use two tape recorders to create a two track recording. I had one of the original Fostex 4-track recorders but it
has only been in the last couple of years, with the advent of recording on a home computer, that I have been able
to create more professional quality recordings.”
What is your musical style?
“I find it difficult to categorize my own style of music. When pressed, I describe it as acoustic based rock. I have
some acoustic only songs and I am working on more fully arranged versions of songs with drums and bass, etc.
Some songs may have a hint of country, others a much different sound. My song catalogue is flavored by many
varied influences and certain songs will reflect the period in which they were written and what I was listening to at
the time. My musical influences include U2, Bruce Spingsteen, Ryan Adams, Elvis Costello, Gram Parsons, Indigo
Girls and many, many others.”
What equipment do you use for your home recording?
“I am currently recording using the Digidesign MBox with ProTools LE on a Dell Dimension 4500 running Windows
XP. This is the family home computer and I do have limitations on processing power in this set up. I do not have
any fancy microphones or instruments. My acoustic guitar is a 1989 Celebrity round back (low end Ovation) and
my electric guitar is a 1982 Fender Telecaster. I currently rent a bass guitar.”

A little about the songs:
So Lovely - inspired by some neighborhood friends here for a year from
England. I like the way they say "lovely" so much I made them say it into a
microphone over and over again and it came out really cool on the
recording.
Wings on the Water - a tribute to the Chesapeake Bay and the people who
live on and around the water. This song, which was orginally written in
1993, is dedicated to the Dubin family who were kind enough to show me
the beauty and wonder of the Bay many years ago. Wings is the first song
from the Avalon Session, a four hour recording session in November 1997
with Brad Reddick (guitar and backing vocals) and Mary Donovan (backing
vocals). Look for more songs from the Avalon Session later this year.
All We Need - a rock love song set in the current financial crises. Written in
August 2008, this song came from deep in the back of my mind and was
unfortunately inspired by the real world we live in.
Old Carolina Road - this was written about four years ago though it took me
a long time to finish the lyrics. It was originally written with a faster tempo
country arrangement. I slowed this story of a "mature man" looking for love
down to a ballad in this version.
Believe in Me - an anthem rock song in an early 1980's style, this song has
3 part harmony in the chorus and some interesting audio effects in the
bridge.
Ride On - this is my first real computer recording where I thought I could
actually do this all by myself. Classic rock subject of the wind in your hair
driving a convertible. I just love the bass line and guitar riff on this simple
tune.
We've Got the Time - this is a very old song written back in the early 90's.
This is live recording from Club Passim in Cambridge, MA in 1996. I am
playing with Brad Reddick. You can download this track for free.
Same Old Road - this is also a very old song written back in the late
1980's/early 90's. This was also recorded live at Club Passim in Cambridge,
MA in 1996. I am playing with Brad Reddick. You can download this track
